Vähennys on 1 piste riippumatta kysymyksen maksimipisteistä.

Tallenne The recording related to questions 5.1 and 5.2.
BS: Nuclear reactors aren’t only used to generate electricity. What else are they used for?EO: All sorts of things. Obviously power reactors, right, making electricity, or probably more advanced, like what we might see more of in the future as well, is making high temperature heat for chemical processes, for making hydrogen or making plastics and chemicals. That kind of thing. So that’s a future application.
BS: Then there are research reactors which are used for scientific experiments.
EO: So, reactors make a lot of neutrons. Neutrons are useful for doing experiments with, and that’s what the Opal reactor does, Lucas Heights, is it has kind of tubes coming out of the reactor called neutron guides, and scientists, physicists and everybody can do their experiments at the end of the tubes where the neutrons come out.

- Sen puoliintumisaika on pitkä. / Sen radioaktiivisuus vähenee hitaasti. / Se säteilee pitkään. (3/0 p.)
Tallenne The recording related to questions 5.5 and 5.6.
EO: So, there’s this particular problem nuclide called Cobalt-60, which is the kind of bane of all decommissioning. The reason Cobalt-60 is problematic is because it releases a particularly energetic, kind of, gamma ray, which travels through concrete and steel, so it’s quite hard to shield.BS: It also has a half-life of around five years, which is the time needed for half the Cobalt-60 to decay, and this adds to the problem.
EO: So generally, when you have radiation safety and shielding problems, when you’re decommissioning a reactor, the nuclide that always comes up, the one you’re doing all your calculations for, is this Cobalt-60. And so, if we’re talking decommissioning of this reactor pressure vessel, you really have to wait for a while.
BS: Yeah, a good while, in fact, we’re talking years. It’s why some nuclear reactor decommissioning takes over a decade.
